This talk covers two areas,
change and leadership.
These are areas which are of
increasing significance
to organizations today.
Yet, at the same time,
they're increasingly
problematic areas and
difficult to work out
what actually an organization
can do in both change and
developing its leadership which
will deliver the results
that are required.
0:23
In doing this, we're going to
cover the following areas.
First of all, the
challenge of change.
What is it that causes
problems with change,
and why is it important
to organizations?
Then I'm going to share
some insights from
some previous research that
I've been involved in doing,
which sometimes gives
some challenging thoughts
on how change works in practice.
Finally, we're going to look,
also, coming out
of that research,
at the leader's
role in change and
some of the key
leader behaviors.
0:54
Let's begin by looking
at the challenges
organizations face in
making change happen.
1:01
In doing this, it's worth
beginning by thinking about some
of the drivers that are causing
change within business.
Investor behavior is
clearly one of the drivers.
Investors demand
performance from
organizations and demand
constant growth in
the organization.
This leads to change.
The nature of people working in
the business is
changing dramatically.
The values of employees are
changing, their expectations.
It's interesting to note that
the level of trust
that employees
have in their organization
is declining quite notably,
so organizations have to change
to deal with these
changed expectations.
Competition is clearly
a major driver,
and the competitive pressures
can constantly mount.
The window of opportunity for
gaining competitive advantage
through new products,
new services is getting
smaller and smaller as
information moves around the
world at an increasing pace.
That's part of the
complex environment
in which organizations
today are working,
and it's not just to do with
the size of organizations,
it's the actual complexity
of interests that are involved,
the complexity of operation.
Part of that complexity
is clearly globalization,
which is having a major
impact on organizations,
indeed, not only in
the private sector,
but also the public sector.
Technology is a key driver.
The rate of change in technology
and its applications,
and how it can be
applied to business
and organizational life
is growing at a pace.
Finally, changes
in society itself,
changes in values
and expectations,
changes in views of the role of
an organization. One of
the things that we've seen
most recently in this
area is the growth in
issues such as corporate
and social responsibility.
