Biography

Professor Zofia Chrzanowska-Lightowlers is a founding member of the Wellcome Trust Centre for Mitochondrial Research at Newcastle University (http://www.newcastle-mitochondria.com/). Zofia’s research interests focus on RNA metabolism and post-transcriptional gene expression in human mitochondria in health and disease, with particular interest in the mitochondrial release factor family of proteins. Her research was supported through a Sir Henry Wellcome Commemorative Award for Innovative Research and Wellcome Trust RCD Fellowship before her tenureship at Newcastle University (UK) where she holds a Professorship in Mitochondrial Biology.
Zofia completed her undergraduate studies at the University of East Anglia in 1983, and then went on to complete a Post Graduate Certificate in Education at the Institute of Education in London. She then undertook an M.Sc. at the University of Oregon, followed by her Ph.D at the University of Newcastle – her thesis title was ‘Regulation of the Homeostasis of Cytochrome c Oxidase.
