Biography

Dr. Balog is an Associate Professor in the School of Mathematical and Physical Sciences and the Portland Laboratory for Biotechnology and Health Sciences at the University of New England. Her areas of expertise encompass structural biology, enzymology, biophysics, and biomaterials. She is primarily focused on addressing the following research questions:... read more(1) How can our understanding of protein structure and function contribute to the design and synthesis of advanced materials? and (2) How can protein-based materials enhance our ability to control and predict the behavior of cells and biological systems? From 2012-2014, Dr. Balog served as a postdoctoral research fellow at Los Alamos National Laboratory’s Center for Integrated Nanotechnologies, where she collaborated with a diverse team of scientists to develop protein polymers for applications in regenerative medicine and optoelectronics. She earned her Ph.D. in Molecular, Cell, and Developmental Biology from the University of California, Santa Cruz in 2012, and her B.S. in Biology from the California Institute of Technology in 2006.
