Biography

Michael Sofroniew, M.D., PhD., is a Distinguished Professor of Neurobiology at the University of California Los Angeles (UCLA). Work in his laboratory is directed at understanding the cell biology of injury and repair in the adult central nervous system (CNS), with a particular focus on understanding how reactive astrocytes contribute... read moreto regulation of CNS inflammation, tissue protection, tissue repair, axon regeneration and the maintenance or recovery of neurological function after diverse CNS insults. He received an M.D. from Ludwigs-Maximillians University in Munich and a Ph.D. (D.Phil.) from Oxford University. After a surgical internship at Johns-Hopkins University he pursued a full-time research career first as a faculty member at Cambridge University and then at UCLA.
