Dr. Mullins received his Bachelor of Science degree in Biology from Wheaton College (IL) and a Master of Science degree in Biology from Saint Louis University. He joined the faculty in the Department of Ophthalmology and Visual Sciences at The University of Iowa in 2001. In 2014, he was appointed to the Martin and Ruth Carver Chair in Ocular Cell Biology. Dr. Mullins’s research interests include the role of the choriocapillaris in health and disease, the molecular pathogenesis of Best disease and other maculopathies, the role of the complement system in early AMD, disease modeling in vivo and in vitro, and determining how genetic variations associated with retinal diseases affect morphology, biochemistry and function at the tissue level. The goal of this translational research is to identify modalities to delay, arrest, or reverse vision loss from common and rare blinding disorders.
