Biography

Andrew Lotery is Chair of Ophthalmology at Southampton and Honorary Consultant Ophthalmic Surgeon. His initial training in ophthalmology was in Belfast, followed by four years in Iowa. He was appointed Chair of Ophthalmology at Southampton in 2002.
His specialty is medical retina with major research interests in age-related macular degeneration, ophthalmic genetics, gene and stem cell therapies. He is Editor in Chief of the journal Eye. He has been awarded the Nettleship Award for Research by the Royal College of Ophthalmology and was listed in the Times as one of the United Kingdom’s top 100 doctors. He was a first wave Senior Investigator for the National Institute for Health Research and sits on the Department of Transport’s visual standards committee. He was given a special award by the Macular Disease society for his work on juvenile macular diseases. He and his team have published over 140 papers in high impact journals including Nature Genetics, Nature Communications, the Lancet and the New England Journal of Medicine.
