Biography

Piri Welcsh is an Assistant Research Professor in the Department of Medicine, Division of Medical Genetics at the University of Washington. She received her undergraduate training at Marquette University and earned her PhD in molecular biology at The Ohio State University. As a postdoctoral fellow at the University of Texas... read moreSouthwestern Medical Center in Dallas, she collaborated with Dr. Mary-Claire King on the cloning of BRCA1. She joined Dr. King's lab at the University of Washington in 1996 where she performed studies designed to determine the cellular function of the BRCA1 protein. She continues to collaborate with Dr. King on identifying additional breast cancer predisposing genes. The focus of her independent research is to determine how alterations in the epigenome contribute to breast and ovarian cancer development.
