David Warhurst received his BSc in zoology at Leicester University, and did his PhD on amoebae of the cockroach. With Wallace Peters at The Liverpool School of Tropical Medicine and later at the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine, where he was supported by the Public Heath Laboratory Service (PHLS) he worked on antimalarial drug action and resistance and became co-Director of the PHLS Malaria Reference Laboratory. He has also worked on pathogenic free living amoebae of the eye and brain and protozoa associated with diarrhoea. He is currently Emeritus Professor of Protozoan Chemotherapy at LSHTM.
