Hello everyone. My name is William Wei.
I'm a professor and Associate Dean at
MacEwan University Business School based in Edmonton Alberta, Canada.
Today I will talk about the "Belt and Road Initiative:
How could Canada get involved?"
And I would like to share with you from a Canadian perspective,
how Canada is seeing today into
an anti-globalization economy and also how
Canada got involved into the Chinese initiative.
My talk will examine the opportunities and challenges
provided by these interesting initiatives by China.

In the era of anti-globalization,
Canada businesses are facing more challenges.
Earlier this year, when Trump administration statements brought
great uncertainty to the trading relationship with Canada and the US.
Trump attacked several times
Canadian dairy supply management systems and saying
that NAFTA has been very, very bad for the United States.
And they are going to make some very big changes and even going to get rid of NAFTA.
The Trump administration decided to impose
the new tariffs of up to 20 percent on most Canadian softwood lumber.
And the US government also launched a 90 day consultation period with Congress earlier this year,
on the industries and the American public that would allow the take
over of the 23 years old North American Free Trade Agreement.
But, on the other hand,
Globe and Mail had a recent survey talking about
that 62 percent of Canadians believed that the expanded trade with China is important.
And fifty-five percent of Canadians support a Canada-China Free Trade Agreement.
