Hello, my name is Jeroen Oskam.
I'm the Director of
the Research Center
at Hotelschool The Hague.
Today I'm going to talk about
the hospitality industry
and the types of
organizations and
professions we can
find in this industry.

Under hospitality, we group
a diverse range of businesses.
In the first place, if
we look at firm size,
we see a number of large
multinational corporations,
but also many small and
medium enterprises,
or even microenterprises.
Let's start with one of
the most well-known
names in the business
and browse through Marriott
International's
latest annual report.
Besides those hotels
that actually
display a Marriott Shield
next to their entrance,
the company operates
29 further brands,
such as Ritz Carlton,
Design Hotels or Moxy.
The company is active
in 138 countries.

Marriott owns or
leases just 64 hotels
around the globe because
of its asset-light
business model.
There are many more properties
owned or leased by third parties
for it's Marriott is contracted to
manage the hospitality operations.
These total 1,989
around the world.
In addition to these hotels,
the majority of over
6,000 businesses are
franchised or licensed hotels
operated by other companies.
Marriott employs 140,000
associates at its hotels.
Furthermore, there are 237,000
staff members who are employed
by the property owners,
but whose employment is
managed by Marriott.
In other words, even if we see
a hotel with a well-known
international brand name
that does not tell us
whether this is in fact
part of a large
multinational corporation
or maybe a property operated by
a local owner under the
international brand name.
In fact, it may even be a
small or medium enterprise.
