I'm now going to talk about the case study, which is mental health among academics in UK universities, the case of Newcastle University. Excessive workloads has been a source of discontent in English universities from at least the 2000s, with a clear acceleration in the mid-2000, and even more so in recent years. According to researcher Liz Morrish, there is strong evidence of poor mental health among academic staff in the period 2009-2016. According to Liz Morrish again, in the research published in 2019, a metric-lead audit culture combined with an expectation doing more with less, has turned universities into anxiety machines, and university staff are suffering from an epidemic of poor mental health. According to her, this has been reported in various newspapers such as the Guardian and also Times Higher Education.
