The managing director MD plays a central role in steering an organization toward its objectives. In the United Kingdom and many Commonwealth countries, the MD is typically the most senior executive, equivalent to the chief executive officer in the United States. Appointed by and accountable to the board of directors, the MD converts the board's strategic vision into effective action, blending long term planning with oversight of daily operations.
