Welcome, everyone. This lecture introduces the foundations of management, a discipline essential to every organization, whether public, private or nonprofit. Management is the process of achieving organizational goals through effective planning, organizing, leading and controlling of resources, both human and material. These functions ensure organizations operate smoothly and adapt to change. As Peter Drucker remarked, management is about getting things done through others, making it a social endeavor. Managers at all levels play pivotal roles in shaping processes and achieving results. A common area of confusion is distinguishing management from leadership. Management focuses on establishing order, planning, budgeting, scheduling, and monitoring to create consistent results. For example, a store manager organizes shifts or sets policies. In contrast, leadership challenges the status quo, sets vision, and motivates people to navigate change. Organizations need both. Without management, chaos ensues. Without leadership, stagnation occurs. The best managers blend both skill sets, efficiently delivering results while embracing change when needed. Our world is changing rapidly. Digital transformation, evolving customer expectations, and global disruptions require that management practices continually adapt. Agile methods, for example, have shifted project and team management by promoting flexibility, transparency, and continuous improvement.
