Welcome to this session on leadership versus management. While often used interchangeably, leadership and management are distinct yet complementary activities within organizations. Understanding their differences goes beyond contrasting job titles. It's about recognizing the unique behaviors, mindsets, and purposes each brings to healthy organizations. Leadership inspires and guides people toward a vision. Management plans, organizes and controls resources to achieve objectives. Both are crucial, but their approaches, priorities, and sources of authority differ. Blending these skills is essential for effectiveness in today's changing environments. Let's explore what distinguishes managers from leaders. Managers focus on practical tasks like planning projects, setting budgets, tracking performance, allocating resources, organizing schedules, and ensuring compliance. For example, a store manager prepares rotors, or a project manager maps out timelines. Leaders, by contrast, inspire and influence others, set a compelling vision, motivate teams, encourage innovation and develop talent. In many roles, people must switch between managing and leading as needed. Another way to differentiate between the two is by considering their relationship with change and stability. Management is about control, consistency, and repeatable excellence. Managers aim to create reliability and optimize current practices, ensuring the organization runs smoothly and efficiently.
