Group dynamics refers to the behavioral and psychological processes within or between social groups. In organizations, groups are essential for completing work, making decisions, and driving innovation. A group is more than a collection of individuals. It is a network of interactions shaping thoughts, feelings, and actions. The way people interact face to face or virtually influences group performance, individual satisfaction, and organizational outcomes. Thus, understanding group dynamics is essential for effective management and leadership. Not every group becomes an effective team. High performing teams stand out due to complimentary skills, clear direction, and established norms for communication and decision making. Trust and psychological safety are crucial. Team members should feel comfortable sharing ideas, concerns, and mistakes without fear. Norms like equal participation and active listening ensure everyone can contribute. Diversity boosts creativity and problem solving, but differences must be included and managed or teams risk conformity and group think. Despite their potential, groups are vulnerable to several pitfalls. Group think, for instance, occurs when the desire for harmony suppresses dissent and leads to poor decision making, as seen in the Bay of Pigs debacle. Conversely, excessive conflict can hinder collaboration. When group members perceive differing levels of conflict, satisfaction and performance can drop, especially if issues aren't addressed.
