Hello. This is a Henry
Stuart talk this time
about leading cultural change
in health. Thanks
for joining us.

When we talk about culture
in healthcare, what
do we really mean?
Alexander Fleming knew a
thing or two about it, but no
not that type of health culture.
We're talking about how we
all grow and develop as
humans in environments
that are let's be honest,
a bit more complex
than a petri dish.

My name's Keith Burnett.
I've been a management
consultant working with
the National health
service here in
the UK for a decade or two.
I know it's been
fashionable to talk about
culture in the healthcare
world for quite a while.
But not everyone gets it.
You might have seen plenty
of things described as
cultural innovation
from free meals.

big old mission statements

and plenty of strategy documents
but few of them
really hit the spot.
So maybe we don't need to
worry so much about
culture after all.
We talked about cultural ideas.
It didn't deliver
much for us and we
can move on. Hold on a minute.
If your career has been
longer than five years or so,
you've already seen what happens
when culture goes wrong.
The experience of
a bullying culture
is a memorable one for
all the wrong reasons.
