Biography

Dr. Evelyn V. Hess obtained her medical training in Dublin, Ireland, and her postgraduate training in London, England. She obtained further training in rheumatology/immunology at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical School in Dallas with Dr. Morris Ziff. She established the Division of Immunology in the Department of Medicine at... read morethe University of Cincinnati Medical Center in 1965. She had an endowed Chair in Medicine in Cincinnati. She was a member of numerous national and international societies and an honorary member of six international societies. She was elected a Master of the American College of Physicians and the American College of Rheumatology. She was a Fellow of the AAAS. Throughout her career, she received many professional honors, including a Daniel Drake Medal in 2001 and the Distinguished Rheumatologist Award from the American College of Rheumatology in 1996. She authored of over 160 scientific articles and numerous editorials, chapters and reviews. Her main interest was in systemic lupus, particularly the drug-related models, and she is remembered as a pioneer and major contributor to the field. Dr. Hess passed away on December 25th 2015; she is survived by her husband, Dr. Michael Howlett, and a nephew, Richard Howlett.
