Dr. Pierotti obtained his degree in Biological Sciences (cum laude) at the University of Milan with an experimental work of cancer immunology with Prof. G. Della Porta. He spent a post-doctoral training period at the Memorial Sloan Kettering Institute in New York with Dr. E. Fleissner and then established his... read moregroup in the Department of Experimental Oncology (headed by Prof. G. Della Porta) at the Istituto Nazionale Tumori di Milano. Dr. Pierotti has been interested in various aspects of experimental oncology, including studies on immunology, biochemistry and molecular biology using both experimental and human tumors and this activity has resulted in over 380 publications. Dr. Pierotti's research interest is now focused on several aspects of molecular oncology including: molecular mechanisms of neoplastic transformation, in particular the role of protein tyrose kinase receptors (PTKRs) in thyroid cancer, where he contributed to discover and characterize the RET and TRK derived oncogenes. Moreover, he is involved in studies aimed at evaluating the potential use of PTKRs in the targeted therapy.
