Biography

Lei Liu is Professor of Chemistry at Tsinghua University. He received undergraduate training at the University of Science and Technology of China in 1999 and obtained a PhD from Columbia University in 2004 under the supervision of Prof. Ronald Breslow. He completed postdoctoral training at Scripps Research Institute in the... read morelaboratory of Prof. Chi-Huey Wong and joined Tsinghua University in 2007. Dr. Liu has focused on the study of chemical protein synthesis. He has developed a method system known as protein hydrazide ligation that is recognized as one of the most efficient technologies for de novo chemical synthesis of any proteins found in nature or designed by humans. Combined with in vivo functional analysis, structural biochemistry, and drug development, chemical protein synthesis has been playing increasingly important roles to support the study of human biology and health, and facilitate the development of precision diagnostics and therapeutics. Dr. Liu’s achievement has been recognized by a number of awards such as the National Natural Science Award (2017), The Xplorer prize (2020), Chambroad Technology Award (2022), and New Cornerstone Investigator (2023).
