Biography

Pleuni Pennings is an evolutionary biologist and works on the evolution of drug resistance in HIV and bacteria. She wants to understand what determines the rates of evolution and transmission of drug resistance, so that we can find ways to halt the evolution and spread of drug resistant strains.... read more

Dr. Pennings has also worked on ants, sympatric speciation and soft sweeps. Recently, she has published on fitness costs of mutations in viruses and the evolution of rats in New York. She also writes a blog and makes videos.

At San Francisco State University, she is heavily involved in several programs to help bio/chem/biochem students learn computer science and coding skills. This includes the PINC minor program, the PINC summer program, the GOLD certificate for graduate students, the Science Coding Immersion Program (SCIP) and the gSTAR certificate for data science and machine learning for biotechnology.
