Ralph Edwards is a graduate of Birmingham University Medical School UK. In the period 1967-1975, he held various clinical training posts becoming a Lecturer in Clinical Pharmacology and then Sub-Dean at the University of Sheffield Medical School, and Consultant Physician United Sheffield Hospitals (UK). Between 1981 and 1990, he was Director and CEO of the National Toxicology Group, New Zealand, also a Professor in Clinical Pharmacology, Otago University and, Consultant Physician, Dunedin Hospital. He was Medical Assessor for Adverse Drug Reactions, Ministry of Health New Zealand, and on government advisory bodies relating to the safety of medicines and chemicals and their regulation and use. He was awarded the FRACP and the FRCP (London) for this work.
From 1985 to 1990, he was Chairperson of the Advisory Group, WHO Collaborating Centre for International Drug Monitoring, Uppsala, Sweden and, from 1990 to 2009, Ralph Edwards was a Professor in Medicine in Sweden and CEO & Director of the WHO Foundation Centre for International Drug Monitoring (Uppsala Monitoring Centre -UMC).
From 2009, he was Senior Medical Advisor to the UMC and WHO Programme for International Drug Monitoring (WHO-PIDM).
Collaborator, CauseHealth, Norwegian University of Life Sciences (2017 -) with a special interest in evaluating disproportionality effects in causation.
In 2019, he received an Honorary DSc from the University of Benin, Nigeria for his work in medicines safety in Africa.
In 2023, a book by Ian Hembrow entitled ”Ralph Edwards: Rare Events” was published by Springer ISBN 978-3-031-14981-8 (eBook), ISBN 978-3-031-14980-8 (Hard Copy).
