Dr. Neil Blumberg MD, Professor of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine at the University of Rochester, has been Director of Transfusion Medicine/Blood Bank at the Strong Memorial Hospital since 1980. He was also Director of Clinical Laboratories from 2004-2016. He received his undergraduate education (1970, BS, magna cum laude), medical school... read more(1975, MD), and residency training in laboratory medicine, hematology and blood banking (1975-78) at Yale University and Yale-New Haven Hospital. He is board certified in clinical pathology (1978; FCAP). He also served two years (1978-80) as Assistant Medical Director at the Connecticut Red Cross Blood Services and on the faculty of the University of Connecticut School of Medicine. His research interests are the effects of blood transfusions on immunity and hemostasis, developing strategies for improving clinical outcomes, and reducing costs in patients with cancer or undergoing surgery. During the last four decades his major clinical focus has been on the supportive care of patients with leukemia or undergoing stem cell transplantation. His work on transfusion immunomodulation and the importance of ABO identical transfusions have been done in collaboration with his wife Dr. Joanna M. Heal MBBS, MRCP.
