His main research interests are the pathogenesis of infection and the development of quantitative modelling tools to gain insight into viral and immune system dynamics. His work entails close collaborations with experimental scientists to develop suitable statistical and dynamic models to analyse experimental data. His modelling work spans multiple scales from the intracellular (e.g., the details of hepatitis C virus infection) to the epidemiological (e.g., models of HIV and influenza epidemics). However, his focus is on within host models of virus and immune response, including natural infection, treatments and vaccines for infections such as HIV, hepatitis B, hepatitis C, SARS-CoV-2 and influenza. Ruy Ribeiro has over 140 peer-reviewed papers in this area, and he has been the PI of several projects funding by multiple international institutions.
