Biography

Martin Maiden is Professor of Molecular Epidemiology and a Fellow of Hertford College at the University of Oxford, UK. He is a Fellow of the Academy of Medical Sciences, the Royal College of Pathologists, the Royal Society of Biology, and the American Academy of Microbiology. Originally trained as a microbiologist,... read morehe has pursued a career developing molecular microbiology for clinical and public health applications, especially the use of high-throughput nucleotide sequence analysis in vaccine design, implementation, and assessment. He led the consortia that developed MLST and undertook the UKMenCar1-4 studies from 1999-2015, which were critical in establishing the importance of herd immunity in meningococcal vaccine effectiveness. His group developed the widely used BIGSdb software and PubMLST website, which provide open-access databases for over 130 bacterial species worldwide.

He is active as a teacher at undergraduate, postgraduate, and professional levels. Martin has published widely with over 400 publications, the majority in peer-reviewed journals, with many highly cited works. He has been funded continuously by the Wellcome Trust with peer-reviewed grants since arriving in Oxford in 1997 and has been the recipient of many other major funding awards. He lectures widely, including the Microbiology Society’s 2021 Marjory Stephenson Prize Lecture.
