Biography

Dr Dalan Bailey is a Group Leader working on the molecular biology of RNA viruses including human and bovine respiratory syncytial virus, the henipa- and morbilli- viruses, and more recently SARS-CoV-2. His research is particularly focused on the virus-host interactions that take place during virus entry and exit; however, he... read morealso has active research projects on innate immunity, viral translation, and vaccine development.

After completing his BSc in Virology at Warwick University, Dr. Bailey did his PhD on the neglected viral pathogen, peste des petits ruminants virus (PPRV) - the small ruminant morbillivirus - before spending 5 years as a postdoctoral researcher working on caliciviruses (murine norovirus and feline calicivirus) in the lab of Prof. Ian Goodfellow at Imperial College London. He has been a Principal Investigator since 2012 working firstly at the University of Birmingham and more recently at The Pirbright Institute, both in the UK.

Since the beginning of 2020, his lab has been involved in SARS-CoV-2 research, splitting its time between basic research on SARS-CoV-2 host range and supporting the development of COVID-19 vaccines. As part of the recently funded UKRI Genotype-to-Phenotype consortium his lab will continue to support SARS-CoV-2 research by helping in the phenotypic characterisation of genetic variants that emerge during the COVID-19 pandemic.
