Gitta Stockinger obtained her PhD in 1978 in Mainz (Germany) and then did postdoctoral studies in London and Babraham before returning to Germany in 1983 for a brief postdoctoral period at the Cancer Research Institute in Heidelberg. Since 2016 she is a Principal Investigator at the newly established Francis Crick Institute.

Gitta Stockinger’s lab has worked on the development and regulation of peripheral T cell responses, on effector T cell plasticity, using cytokine 'fate' reporter models to facilitate visualisation, and isolation of cells that have committed to particular cytokine expression to study their plasticity in different inflammatory models in vivo. More recently she has focused on the impact of environmental signals transmitted via the aryl hydrocarbon receptor (AhR) on immune responses at barrier sites, such as the skin, lung, and gut.
