R. Hilbrands attended Brussels Free University (VUB) and obtained his Medical degree in 2003 followed by board certification as a nephrologist in 2011 and endocrinologist-diabetologist in 2015. He earned his PhD at the Diabetes Research Center of the VUB in 2011. He currently holds an academic position at the Diabetes Clinic of the University Hospital of the VUB. Besides his clinical activities as a diabetologist, his work involves immune intervention studies and beta cell replacement therapy in T1D patients in line with his field of expertise.
