Biography

Sue Welburn is Executive Dean of Zhejiang University – University of Edinburgh Joint Institute (ZJE) at Zhejiang International Campus and founding Director of the Global Health Academy and Professor of Medical and Veterinary Molecular Epidemiology at Edinburgh Medical School: Biomedical Sciences, College of Medicine & Veterinary Medicine, University of Edinburgh.... read moreSue is co‐Chair of the new British Council supported China‐UK Joint Institute Alliance. Sue has held several senior management positions at University of Edinburgh including the roles of Assistant Principal Global Health and Vice Principal Global Access.

ZJE is UoE’s largest overseas educational and research partnership, in China and Globally, bringing together >80 research active academic staff to foster collaboration across major biomedical research themes (Regenerative Medicine & Stem Cells, Inflammation & Immunology, Infection & Molecular Medicine, Neuroscience, Cancer & Oncology and Bio‐Medical Informatics) in state‐of‐the‐art research and teaching facilities at Zhejiang University’s new International Campus in Haining, China.

Sue’s research is focused on the design and use of molecular diagnostic tools for the study and management of neglected zoonotic diseases (anthrax, rabies, brucellosis, bovine TB, trypanosomiasis, echinococcosis, cysticercosis and leishmaniasis), developing integrated One ‘Public’ Health control methodologies for their control in human and domestic and wild animal populations. These neglected diseases are major causes of ill‐health in people in Africa, Asia and Latin America. Research has encompassed research ranging from ‘grass‐roots’ fieldwork to laboratory‐based dissection of the problems at the gene level.
