Biography

Richard Elliott was a world leader in the field of bunyaviruses. Most recently he held the Bill Jarrett Chair of Infectious Diseases at the University of Glasgow. Prior to this he was Professor of Virology at the Centre for Biomolecular Sciences at St Andrews University's School of Biology. He obtained... read morehis doctorate from the University of Oxford and undertook postdoctoral training with Peter Palese in New York. He worked in the MRC Virology Unit in Glasgow and then Glasgow University, becoming Professor of Molecular Virology in 1995. He moved to St Andrews in 2005. He worked on negative-strand RNA viruses for over 25 years, particularly bunyaviruses and his group was the first to establish a reverse genetics system for any segmented genome negative-strand RNA virus. He passed away in June 2015 after a short illness, he will be remembered for his many contributions to the field of virology. His is survived by his wife and two daughters.
