Professor Sir Peng is a consultant ophthalmic surgeon at Moorfields Eye Hospital in London, and also has a research team at the adjacent UCL Institute of Ophthalmology. His research interests are in anti-scarring therapies, surgical therapies for adult and childhood glaucoma, and optic nerve regeneration. He has developed surgical techniques,... read moreincluding the Moorfields Safer Surgery System which has improved the safety and outcomes of antimetabolite-assisted trabeculectomy, especially reducing bleb related endophthalmitis and blebitis. With his team, Sir Peng has developed anti-scarring regimens based on laboratory research, with international clinical trials. He is developing new anti-scarring drugs and delivery systems, as well as drainage devices; he has proposed the 10-10-10 challenge for glaucoma: an intraocular pressure of 10 mmHg for 10 years, done in 10 minutes.
His publications include over 450 papers, chapters and books. He and his group have won some 25 awards. He has helped raise over £100 million for clinical and research facilities, including the children’s eye hospital and the clinical research centre at Moorfields, the largest in the world. He has appeared in the Times List of Britain's Top 100 Doctors for adults and children, was elected to the British Academy of Medical Sciences and appointed as one of 200 UK NIHR Senior Investigators. In 2013, he was knighted in the Queen’s Birthday Honours for services to ophthalmology.
