Dr. Hartl completed a D. med degree at the University of Heidelberg and a D. med habil. degree in Biochemistry at the University of Munich with Walter Neupert. He did postdoctoral training with William Wickner at the University of California at Los Angeles, and then was Associate Member and Member... read moreat Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center in New York and Associate Investigator of the Howard Hughes Medical Institute before joining the Max Planck Institute of Biochemistry as a Director. Dr. Hartl is studying the mechanisms of protein folding in the cell with a wide range of methods from biophysics to cell biology. His laboratory has a long-standing interest in the structure and function of molecular chaperones. He is also investigating how protein misfolding causes cellular toxicity and the relationship of this process to neurodegenerative diseases such as Chorea Huntington.
