Biography

Mary Ann McCrackin, D.V.M., Ph.D. is Veterinary Medical Officer, Ralph H. Johnson VA Medical Center and Associate Professor, Department of Comparative Medicine at the Medical University of South Carolina (MUSC). She is Director of the Surgical Research Laboratory in the Division of Laboratory Animal Resources at MUSC. Dr. McCrackin obtained... read morea veterinary medical degree from the University of Georgia (1989), completed an internship in small animal medicine and surgery at Santa Cruz Veterinary Hospital (1990), received residency training in small animal surgery at the University of Tennessee-Knoxville, and acquired a doctoral degree in microbiology and biochemistry from the University of Montana-Missoula (1999). She is board-certified by the American College of Veterinary Surgeons (1994) and the American College of Laboratory Animal Medicine (2010).
Dr. McCrackin practiced surgery in private referral and academic settings with a subspecialty of general surgery while a faculty member at the University of Georgia. She transitioned to research in 2004 as the Director and Attending Veterinarian of Laboratory Animal Resources at the University of Montana, then Virginia Tech, and now at the VA Medical Center in Charleston, SC. Dr. McCrackin has served many professional organizations in leadership positions and is a member of the Panel on Euthanasia that developed the 2013 edition of the AVMA Guidelines for the Euthanasia of Animals.
