Biography

Alun Thomas is Professor of Informatics at the University of Utah. He obtained his PhD in Mathematical Statistics from Cambridge University in 1985, then lectured in statistics at the University of Liverpool, University of Washington and University of Bath. In 1995 he joined Myriad Genetics, the world's first genomics company,... read moreas Director of Statistics and Computing and then later as Vice President of Bioinformatics. In 2001 he returned to academia, first as Professor of Informatics at Sheffield University and then at the Medical Informatics Department of the University of Utah. His research interests are in computational statistics applied to problems in genetics. While at Myriad he was involved in several genomic searches for disease susceptibility genes including BRCA2, one of the breast cancer susceptibility genes.
