Biography

Andrew McDonald was most recently Director of Library and Learning Services & Head of Lifelong Learning at the University of East London. Previously, he was Director of Information Services at the University of Sunderland and before that Deputy Librarian at the University of Newcastle. His outstanding contribution and international leadership... read morehas been recognised by a Chair in Information Management and Strategy and by Fellowships of both the Chartered Institute of Library and Information Professionals (CILIP) and The Royal Society of Arts. At national level, Prof. McDonald currently sits on the Joint Information Systems Committee's Digital Content Advisory Group and has served on CILIP Council, chairing both its International Panel and its Academic & Research Libraries Section. A member of the Executive of the Society of College, National and University Libraries, he also chaired its Space Planning Group. He has acted as a consultant for a dozen universities and as an assessor for seven senior library and professorial appointments. At international level, Prof. McDonald is currently Secretary of the Electronic Publishing Trust and chairs the Academic and Research Libraries Section of the International Federation of Library Associations and Institutions. He has directed several short courses, undertaken training and consultancy work and engaged in numbers of study tours around the world. His professional contributions include some 140 papers presented at UK and international conferences and more than 70 published articles and book chapters, and he has secured over 2 million GBP of external funding for research and development projects concerned largely with digital archives, virtual learning environments and information literacy.
