Prof. Johannes Hell University of California, Davis, USA1 Talk
Dr. Johannes Hell received his ‘Diplom’ (Master of Science equivalent) in Biochemistry from the University of Tübingen, Germany, for work with Dr. Herbert Stadler at the Max-Planck Institute for Biophysical Chemistry in Göttingen, Germany, on establishing a new method for the fast isolation of highly functional synaptic vesicles from mammalian... read morebrain. He did his PhD thesis work with Dr. Reinhard Jahn at the Max-Planck Institute for Biochemistry in Munich. Dr. Hell demonstrated for the first time functional uptake of the neurotransmitter gamma aminobutyric acid (GABA) into synaptic vesicles. He was awarded a PhD degree from the University of Munich, Germany. He then joined Dr. William Catteral’s laboratory at the University of Washington in Seattle, USA, where he identified several different calcium channels at the molecular level and characterized their phosphorylations. After faculty appointments at the University of Wisconsin in Madison and University of Iowa in Iowa City, Dr. Hell moved in 2009 to the University of California at Davis, USA, where he is Professor and Vice Chair for Academic Development of the Department of Pharmacology, Departmental Mentoring Director, and Director of the NIH-funded Predoctoral Training Program in Pharmacology.
