Susan Gasser studied at the University of Chicago (Honors, Biophysics) and University of Basel, receiving her PhD in Biochemistry with Gottfried Schatz, for studies on yeast mitochondrial biogenesis. During her postdoctoral studies she studied topoisomerase II, mammalian metaphase chromosome structure and long range chromatin folding. She led research teams at... read morethe Swiss Institute for Experimental Cancer Research (Epalinges s/Lausanne) and at the University of Geneva, both in Switzerland, studying the functional implications of chromatin organization in budding yeast. Since December 2004, she is Director of the Friedrich Miescher Institute for Biomedical Research in Basel, Switzerland, and Professor in Molecular Biology at the University of Basel. She has served on the Swiss National Science Foundation Council, was Chairman of the EMBO Council, and a member of the Science and Technology Advisory Council for the President of the European Commission. Her laboratory is funded by grants awarded by the SNSF, Swiss Cancer League, Human Frontiers in Science Program, Novartis Research Foundation, and various EU programs.
