Hello. I'm Mike Clayton
and I'm the founder of
Online PM Courses, which
is both a website and
a YouTube channel.
In this talk, we're
going to look
at project stakeholder
engagement.
This is the process of engaging
with our stakeholders.

Projects would be easy if
it weren't for the people.
That is to say, most
of the disciplines of
project management are
fundamentally simple
and straightforward.
What makes it difficult to
manage projects is we've
got to manage all of the
people around the project.
People come with ideas.
They come with agendas.
They come with perceptions and
priorities and we've got
to juggle all of these.
It's also important
that we understand
what I'm talking about when
I use the term stakeholders.
I'm going to use the widest,
most general definition of
stakeholders that
I can think of.
A stakeholder is anybody
who has any connection
to your project.
These are people who are
affected by the way that you
do the project or by the way
that the project turns out.
These are also people who
can impact the way you do
your project or who can
impact the way it turns out.

One of the things I've
learned throughout
my project management
career is that it is
your stakeholders
who will determine
the success (or not)
of your project.
You can deliver your project to
specification on time
and bang on budget.
But if the stakeholders
around the project
don't like what you've
done or don't engage with
the products or services
you've created,
then your project
is not a success.
Stakeholder engagement is
a critical discipline
for us to get right.
