Hello, my name is Christina Quinlan and I work at The Graduate Business School at the Technological University of Dublin. In this talk, I'm going to explain the four frameworks approach to the research project.

The four frameworks approach to the research project is a model for the research project that I developed from my teaching practice. It's a very simple model and it's designed to facilitate students in developing their understanding of the work of undertaking a research project. The model provides novice researchers with the confidence to undertake research. The research project as it develops, goes through all of the stages of the research process and will naturally become more complex than the four frameworks approach to the research project perhaps suggests.

On the screen now, you can see the four frameworks approach to the research project. The first framework is the conceptual framework. The conceptual framework is contained in the research statement or question in that one sentence that starts the research project. The research statement or question in one sentence contains all of the key concepts in the research project. The research statement or question is the conceptual framework for the research project. The second framework is the theoretical framework. The theoretical framework is to be found in the literature review. Sometimes the terms literature review and theoretical framework are used interchangeably. When we're talking about the theoretical framework, we're talking about essentially the content of the literature review that the researcher writes for the research project. The methodological framework is the third framework in the four frameworks approach. The methodological framework is contained in the research methodology chapter that the researcher writes for the dissertation or thesis or in the research methodology section that the researcher presents in the report of the research. The methodological framework contains all of the information about how the research was carried out. The fourth framework is the analytical framework. The analytical framework is presented in the data analysis chapter that the researcher presents in their dissertation. The project of analysing data is a very big project and it can go on for a number of weeks or a number of months and sometimes even a number of years but what goes into the dissertation is simply a synopsis of all of that work. The researcher develops an analytical framework for the data analysis chapter or the data analysis section, in order to make decisions about what elements of the analysis to present in the written account of the research project. Now, if we invert the model, if we turn the model upside down, we can see clearly how the conceptual framework supports all of the other frameworks in the research project. The conceptual framework, that one sentence, that is the research statement or the research question, supports and direct all of the work of the theoretical framework, the methodological framework, and the analytical framework.
