Hi there. This presentation
is about the impact of
generative artificial
intelligence and
the Metaverse on knowledge
management and learning.
My name is Prof. Eric Tsui
from the Educational
Research Center
of the Hong Kong
Polytechnic University.
If you think about the title,
it's bringing together
two hot technologies and
in two very important
areas as well.

Well, allow me to focus on
knowledge management first.
In fact, I want to especially
focus on tacit knowledge.
Tacit knowledge is
something that's all
remaining in our head.
It's not explicit;
it's not written down.
Sometimes we are subconscious
about what we actually know.

As the late Prof.
Nonaka once said,
tacit knowledge is the
source of all knowledge.
In fact, tacit knowledge
is a source of
innovation and competitive
advantage for organizations.
Explicit knowledge,
on the other hand,
that has been externalized,
cannot generate new
knowledge, but tacit can.
Without tacit knowledge,
there's no explicit knowledge.
I think that
convincingly highlights
the importance of
tacit knowledge.

Now, in a conventional
organizational environment,
there's a lot of knowledge
being generated.
For example, there are
people in organizations,
and people usually
work on projects.
They talk. They discuss.
They have meetings.
There's a lot of
leakage of knowledge
because very few of this
information is being
written down in organizations.
There are also repositories
that store explicit assets,
and there are search
engines to locate for it.
However, there's also
leakage in knowledge
because not always the
stored knowledge can be
accurately and
conveniently retrieved.
So there's another
source of leakage there.
Furthermore, organizations
never exist in isolation.
Organizations actually
have sub-units
and they have to interface with
the rest of the world,
with other organizations
with government as well.
So there are additional
knowledge leakages
when knowledge flows
across these units.
All in all, it's a
very dim picture
because we are leaking
a lot of knowledge.
Well, in fact,
writings on the wall,
businesses have long
expressed the pain
and the expensive costs due to
the leakage of knowledge,
especially tacit knowledge.
