Welcome to this session.
My name is Dr. Melinda Ratkai,
and I am a professor
and researcher
at HotelSchool the Hague,
based in the Netherlands.
Today, I will be sharing a
sustainability case study
that we can all learn from,
especially as future
hospitality professionals.
We will explore how Garden
Hotels and Resorts,
a family-run hotel
chain in Spain,
implemented a circular
economy project.
This project connects tourism
with local agriculture
through organic waste
management and climate action.
Let's dive into how
hotels can become
environmental
stewards, while also
improving guest experience
and operational efficiency.

Let's begin with a quick
overview of the company.
Garden Hotels and Resorts is
a family-owned chain
headquartered in Mallorca,
one of Spain's Balearic Islands.
It was founded in 1986,
and now operates various
hotels across Mallorca,
Menorca, Ibiza, Huelva, and
in the Dominican Republic.

The company's founder,
Miquel Ramis,
emphasizes four core
values: responsibility,
harmony, enthusiasm,
and authenticity.
These values have
shaped Garden Hotels
into a pioneer in
sustainability.
In fact, it became the
first hotel chain in Spain
to receive the AENOR
Circular Economy
Strategy Certification in 2021.
The national benchmark
that recognizes
companies applying circular
models across operations.
