Richard Carthew obtained his BSc in Biology from Queen's University, Canada. He then went on to study for a MSc in Botany at the University of Toronto. In 1999 he joined the University of Pittsburgh. He is currently the Owen L. Coon Professor of Molecular Biology at Northwestern University, which he was awarded in 2004, having joined the institution in 2001.
