Biography

Following completion of his degree in bacteriology and genetics, Dr Goldberg worked as a biomedical scientist in clinical microbiology for 4.5 years at Leicester Royal Infirmary, UK. He then studied at the University of Leicester for a PhD in bacterial molecular genetics before spending several years studying the regulation of... read morevirulence gene expression in pathogenic strains of Escherichia coli and Salmonella enterica. He used microarray to study the role of nucleoid-associated proteins such as H-NS to coordinate gene expression including virulence genes in response to environmental stimuli. He also used microarray to study and compare the responses of harmless commensal strains of E. coli and pathogenic enterohaemorrhagic E. coli to different stresses such as oxidative, thermal and osmotic shock. Dr Goldberg then spent some time lecturing in food microbiology and food safety to post-graduate students before moving into more general and clinical microbiology teaching. In addition to his work in molecular microbiology, Dr Goldberg is also actively working on drug discovery, seeking new compounds to combat the growth in multi-drug resistant pathogens.
