He joined the biochemistry faculty at Purdue University in 1973 and later moved to the University of Michigan, where he served as chair of the Department of Biological Chemistry. He became co-director of Michigan's Life Sciences Institute in 2001, before rejoining University of California, San Diego in 2003. Dr. Dixon is a member of the Institute of Medicine and the National Academy of Sciences.
