This presentation is about
Knowledge Application
and Decision-Making,
and in particular
it's about using
information and knowledge
to make better decisions.
My name is Antti Lonnqvist.
I'm both an academic and
a practitioner of
knowledge-based management.
I'm a Professor of Information
and Knowledge Management,
and I've been studying these
themes for about 20 years.
In addition, during
the past 11.5 years,
I have been in a full-time
leadership position
in a university,
applying knowledge-based
management practices.
Thus, this presentation is
based on the combination of
my academic knowledge and
my practical managerial
experiences.

Having relevant and
timely knowledge
is necessary for
making good decisions.
However, the benefits of
information and
knowledge management
are not realized
if the utilization
of information is incomplete.
For example, if everyday
work feels hectic
and there's
information overload,
valuable decision-supporting
information
may be left unused,
and decisions are made
based on incomplete
information and intuition.
Therefore, it's important
to address the issues
related to supporting
knowledge application and use.
1:20
Let's start with
defining the topic,
knowledge-based decision-making:
what is it all about?
A simple example of
knowledge-based decision-making
is navigating in
an unfamiliar city
using a mobile map application.
Based on the information
provided by the app,
it's easy to understand
where you are
and which direction to turn
at the next intersection
to move towards
your destination.
The real-time updated map view
and location information
make it easy to act.
This example is quite simple
because the urban landscape
is clear and static.
Streets and buildings
remain in place,
and the scenery
is easy to grasp.
In organizations, the
operating environment and
management landscape are
often ambiguous and dynamic.
There, more complex
navigation tools
than a mobile map
application are needed to
understand the situation and
make the right decisions.
At its core, however,
is the same thing.
Relevant and timely
information helps make
good decisions that lead to
the desired destination.
