Abstract
This paper describes how Alberta Health Services (AHS) has learned from the various disasters in the province to develop a more coordinated approach to psychosocial response and recovery. It will explain the impact of disasters, typical stress reactions, the theoretical underpinnings of psychosocial response and recovery, while also highlighting some key successes and strategies used at AHS.

Author's Biography
Ken Hoffer is part of a team developing a province-wide business continuity programme across all of Alberta Health Services. He is also an adviser to the Emergency Management and Disaster Recovery Course at Mount Royal University. A graduate of the Canadian Emergency Management College, Ken has more than 30 years of incident response experience, including responding to the Edmonton tornado, the Slave Lake Wildfire, the Southern Alberta floods and the Regional Municipality of Wood Buffalo wildfires.
Tobi Martin is a registered psychologist for Alberta Health Services, where she works with the Mobile Response Team, a multi-disciplinary mental health crisis team. She has been involved in the response to such incidents as the Southern Alberta floods and the Regional Municipality of Wood Buffalo wildfires. Tobi has been developing the Calgary Zone Psychosocial Response Team for Alberta Health Services.
