Abstract
The article focuses on the devastating floods of 2007, which impacted particularly badly on the Yorkshire and Humber region. Within the article is information about the scale of the disaster and the lessons learned both in the immediate response phase as well as the ongoing recovery process.

Author's Biography
Nick Best is the Deputy Regional Director, Regional Resilience within the Government Office for Yorkshire and the Humber. Nick provides the strategic lead and high-level representational capacity for regional resilience to ensure the region is prepared to deal with large-scale emergencies. Nick was involved in establishing the regional resilience network in 2002 and has led on resilience in the Yorkshire and Humber region since. Among other emergencies, he was heavily involved in the summer 2007 floods, both in coordinating the regional response and supporting the recovery problems. In addition, he acts as the Government Office Lead Negotiator for Wakefield and Rotherham in the Local Area Agreement process.
David Fraser is a geographer and archaeologist by training and an environmental resource manager by experience. In 2005, David moved to the Government Office for Yorkshire and the Humber and is now Deputy Regional Director, Environment and Lead Director for delivering the regional objectives of the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs and the Department of Energy and Climate Change. David also is the Government Office’s Lead Director for the City of York and North Yorkshire subregion. After the summer floods of 2007, and working closely with Nick Best, he coordinated recovery activity within the region for the Government Office.
