Jeffrey C. Hall has been investigating problems revolving round Drosophila behavior since the early 1970s: reproductively related phenomena and those connected with biological rhythms, studied via mutants plus molecular identification and manipulation of genes, and how they point to the underlying neurobiology of these behavioral processes. He began his neurogenetic investigations as a postdoctoral researcher at the California Institute of Technology and has continued to do so at Brandeis University since 1974.

In 2017, Jeffrey C. Hall was awarded The Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine together with Michael Rosbash and Michael W. Young "for their discoveries of molecular mechanisms controlling the circadian rhythm".
