Biography

Ruth Lehmann has made significant contributions to two fundamental aspects of developmental biology: cell polarity and cell migration. Using Drosophila genetics, she demonstrated that RNA localization together with translational control provide efficient mechanisms to establish asymmetry within a single cell. In recent studies, she identified novel signaling pathways required for... read moreprimordial germ cell migration. Dr. Lehmann received her PhD in 1985 with noble laureate Christiane Nusslein-Volhard at the Max Planck Institute in Tubingen, Germany. After postdoctoral studies at the MRC in Cambridge, England, she became a faculty member at the Whitehead Institute at MIT in 1988. In 1996, she moved to NYU School of Medicine, where she is presently a HHMI investigator and the Director of the Skirball Institute.
