Dr. Ryan completed a PhD in statistics at Harvard University in 1983. After completing a postdoctoral fellowship in the Department of Biostatistics, she joined the faculty there in 1985 and has been there ever since. She has a joint appointment at Dana-Farber Cancer Institute and for many years worked on... read morethe design and analysis of clinical trials in cancer. Dr Ryan has always had an interest in the impact of environmental exposures on the development of cancer and other adverse health outcomes. She has worked on statistical methods for the analysis of data from toxicological studies in animals. In more recent years, her interests have been primarily in the area of environmental epidemiology. She is interested in the development and application of methods that allow researchers to use complex, multi-dimensional measures of exposure. GIS and spatial statistics is a recent interest of Dr Ryan. She has served on a number of National Academy Committees charged with evaluating high profile environmental exposures, including arsenic in drinking water and mercury exposure in fish.
