Biography

Prof. Bertram Ekejiuba Bright Nwoke has to his credit BSc Zoology (Second Class Upper Division) in 1979; MSc Applied Entomology & Parasitology (1981), and PhD Medical Parasitology & Entomology (1987) all from University of Jos, Nigeria. He started his academic career in 1981 with Imo State University Nigeria and was... read morepromoted to Professor of Public Health Parasitology and Entomology in 1994. Prof. Nwoke has impressive scientific contributions in the biology, epidemiology, control/elimination and management of human parasitic diseases and their vectors. WHO/TDR, in 1991 appointed him principal investigator on rapid diagnosis of river blindness in Africa. This led to the development of Rapid Epidemiological Mapping of Onchocerciasis (REMO) adopted by WHO as then acceptable community diagnostic mapping tool for Onchocerciasis in tropical Africa. He was later in 1995 appointed the leading Consultant by WHO Geneva on REMO for the 19 endemic Africa countries under the auspices of the African Programme for Onchocerciasis Control. As WHO/APOC Consultant for REMO in Africa, he led the national teams of Uganda, Chad, Liberia, Central Africa Republic, Cameroon, Rwanda, Burundi, Gabon, Malawi, Ghana, Kenya, Southern Sudan, Ethiopia, Angola, Tanzania, Mozambique and of course Nigeria to conduct their REMO exercise. He was a TDR/WHO Post-doctoral Fellow on Advance Epidemiological Field Research Training at WHO/Onchocerciasis Control Programme (OCP) in West Africa, Ouagadougou, Burkina Faso. Also he was a Postdoctoral Fellow, WHO and Bill Gates Lymphatic Support Centre at Liverpool School of Tropical Medicine. He is a Fellow, Nigerian Academy of Science, Fellow, Parasitology & Public Health Society of Nigeria, Fellow, Royal Society of Tropical Medicine & Hygiene UK, Fellow, Zoological Society of Nigeria, Fellow, Society for Environmental Health, Nigeria, Fellow, African Institute of Public Health Professionals and a Member, American Society of Tropical Medicine & Hygiene Prof. B. E. B. Nwoke has strongly contributed to academic leadership and growth as well as stimulated superior and excellent research and learning in the University. I has successfully supervised more than 300 undergraduate projects, 77 Masters Degree and 74 PhD Theses. Currently, he has to his credit 213 academic publications. With an impeccable probity and integrity, he has successfully completed at least 18 institutional, national and/or international Research grants. Currently, he is a member of the Mectizan Expert Committee and Chairman, Nigerian Onchocerciasis Elimination Committee.
